By purchasing FSC certified wood, you are helping to safeguard responsible forest management, which means that together we support the following 10 basic principles:

  1. Compliance with laws
Forest management must comply with all laws, regulations and nationally-ratified international treaties, conventions and agreements.
  2. Workers’ rights and working conditions
Forest management must maintain or enhance the social and economic conditions for those employed in the forest.
  3. Indigenous peoples’ rights
The organisation (forest owner) must identify and uphold indigenous peoples’ legal and traditional rights of ownership and use of land, territories and resources that are affected by operations.
  4. Community relations
The organisation (forest owner) must contribute to maintaining or enhancing the social and economic conditions for the local community.
  5. Benefits from the forest
Forest management must effectively manage the forest property’s many products and services in order to maintain or enhance long-term economic viability and the range of social and environmental benefits from the forest.
  6. Environmental amenities and environmental impact
The organisation (forest owner) must maintain, preserve and restore the benefits and environmental amenities of the forest’s ecosystem and must prevent, remedy or reduce any negative environmental impacts.
  7. Management plans
The organisation (forest owner) must have a management plan that complies with its policies and objectives and is adapted in relation to scale, intensity and risk. The management plan must be implemented and kept up-to-date based on information from monitoring in order to promote carefully adapted forest management. The related procedural documentation must be sufficient to instruct personnel, inform affected parties and interested stakeholders and justify operational decisions.
  8. Monitoring and assessment
The organisation (forest owner) must demonstrate that progress towards achieving objectives, the effect of operational activities and conditions for the operational unit are monitored and assessed in relation to the scale, intensity and risk of the operating activities in order to be able to implement carefully adapted management.
  9. High conservation values
The organisation (forest owner) must maintain and/or enhance the “high conservation values” in the forest by using the precautionary principle.
  10. Implementation of operational activities
Operational activities that are performed by, or on behalf of, the forest property must be selected and implemented in accordance with the organisation’s (forest owner’s) economic, environmental and social policies and objectives, as well as being in compliance with FSC’s overall principles and criteria.
